MAF Names Elected Officials
of the Year
On December 5, MAF named Governor Rick Scott as Elected Official of the Year for his leadership on the sales tax exemption for manufacturing machinery and equipment and strong support of policies that improve the manufacturing business climate in Florida.
Also honored were Rep. Marlynn Magar, Rep. Ed Hooper, Sen. Dorothy Hukill and Sen. Andy Gardiner for their roles in advancing the manufacturing business agenda during the 2013 legislative session. Congratulations to them all!

At the 10th Annual Manufacturers Summit on December 5, MAF named the following companies as Manufacturers of the Year: Arcadia Aerospace,Seal Aftermarket Products, Gerdau, and ConMed Linvatec. FDOE Approves CNC Training for State Funding
On November 19 the Florida Department of Education placed IHK CNC Training, offered by Machining Solutions, on the state approved Post Secondary Industry Certification Funding List. This makes it eligible for school funding and is the only CNC machining program in Florida that has achieved this distinction. To learn more visit www.machiningtraining.com.
TRADE Grant Implementation Begins
The MAF Center for Advanced Manufacturing Excellence signed a contract with St. Petersburg College on October 24 to serve as the Business Liaison for the U.S. Department of Labor TRADE Grant with twelve colleges in Florida. In this capacity, the MAF Center will work with the MAF regional manufacturing associations, twelve state colleges and workforce boards in Florida to develop manufacturing programs that are relevant to today's manufacturing workforce needs. Further, the group will identify internships at manufacturing plants for some 1,500 students from these colleges over the next three years. MAF Speaks at Freight & Logistics Leadership Forum
Al Stimac, MAF President, was a key note speaker at the Florida Department of Transportation Freight & Logistics Leadership Forum on November 18-19. He spoke about the face of advanced manufacturing today, the role that manufacturing plays in exporting, the U.S. transportation infrastructure, how Florida compares to other states on road and port infrastructure, and how manufacturing and logistics are interdependent.

New Manufacturers Association
Manufacturers in northwest Florida have formed the Northwest Florida Manufacturers Council and have joined the Manufacturers Association of Florida Board of Directors. Leading the organization are Greg Britton, CEO of Ft. Walton Machining and Jennifer Grove, Workforce Development Coordinator at Gulf Power. Manufacturer to Help Shape Education
Al Stimac, MAF President and President of Metal Essence, has been appointed by Florida Senate President Don Gaetz to the Florida Higher Education Coordinating Council. Manufacturers have a keen interest in helping shape the education of Florida students and Al Stimac will be a great asset to the Council. He has also been appointed to the Manufacturing Institute Board of Directors, the national workforce and education arm of the National Association of Manufacturers. Congratulations!
MAF Center Research Council Established
The MAF Center for Advanced Manufacturing Excellence, Inc. (MAF Center), historically involved in workforce and education projects such as Dream It Do It and college manufacturing education, has established a Research Council for the purpose of planning and executing manufacturing-led research projects.
In October the MAF Research Council applied to NIST for a planning grant to capture tacit/tribal knowledge within a company and embed it into virtual, online, on-demand training for company employees. The grant award will be made in January 2014.

Manufacturing Sales Tax Exemption Passes Florida Legislature
On May 1, 2013 the Florida Legislature passed a new sales tax exemption law for manufacturers purchasing machinery and equipment that is effective April 2014. MAF thanks Governor Scott for his "manufacturing vision" and Sen. Hukill, Rep. Magar, Senate President Gaetz and Speaker Weatherford for their leadership on this issue. The measure, contained in HB 7007, will help grow Florida's economy and allow manufacturers to be more competitive. It was one of Governor Scott's top two priorities this year and MAF's top priority. Manufacturing Sales Tax Change
On January 1, 2013, a new law went into effect in Florida that reduces how much productivity expanding manufacturers have to show in order to receive a sales tax exemption for the machinery and equipment they purchase. The productivity showing was reduced from 10% to 5%. Thank you to Governor Scott and the Florida Legislature for making that change in the last legislative session! It is contained here in Chapter 2012-32, Laws of Florida.
Scholarships for Exporting
Scholarships are available to assist qualified manufacturing small businesses in Florida who are "new to export" identify growth strategies through the development of customized Export Marketing Plans. A Florida SBDC Certified Business Consultant will meet with you to conduct a confidential, in-depth business assessment. This consultant will prepare and provide your company with a customized Export Marketing Plan.
To be eligible: Company must have a goal for growth, minimum of 2 years in business, 5 or more full time employees and $500,000 to $10 million in annual sales. Cost to qualifying company is $500; Value of scholarship is $2,500. They are going fast so don't delay.
